    Kaali marked the first multi-starrer featuring both Chiranjeevi and Rajinikanth. Produced simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil, this film was directed by SP Muthuraman. Released in Telugu on September 19, 1980, and in Tamil on July 3, Rajinikanth played the lead role in Kaali. Vijay Kumar took on Chiranjeevi's role in the Tamil version. The film enjoyed box office success, featuring Telugu actress Seema opposite Rajinikanth.

Following this movie, Chiranjeevi and Rajinikanth didn't work together again, as both became busy with their individual projects. Later, Chiranjeevi rose to the number 1 spot in Telugu cinema, and Rajinikanth too in Tamil. Rajinikanth was considered for a role in Chiranjeevi's 'Raja Vikramarka' but it never materialized.
